Full Time: Dynamo Draw Red Bulls At One All

The Houston Dynamo drew their second game in a row after tying the New York Red Bulls at one goal apiece.

Tally Hall had another man-of-the-match performance against the Red Bulls and was only beaten by Dane Richards early in the second half. Cam Weaver, who came on for an injured Brian Ching, leveled for the Dynamo just three minutes after Richards’ goal, saving a point for Houston.

The game was end-to-end most of the 90 minutes, and both teams came up with a number of chances. The best chance of the first half went to Brian Ching whose shot hit the crossbar after a Geoff Cameron flick-on following a Brad Davis free kick.

The Red Bulls had the better of the chances in the second half, but Dynamo goalkeeper continued to be a brick wall, coming up huge on a few chances for Houston.

The big news of the night for Dynamo fans was the departure of Brian Ching, who left the game late in the first half with what appeared to be a rib injury following a challenge with Red Bulls goalkeeper Buona Coundoul. Cam Weaver came on for Ching, but the Dynamo attack looked much better with the veteran captain on the pitch.

Dynamo coaches and fans should be happy drawing with such a tough opponent on the road. The only downside to the night was Ching’s injury, and no information on his status is available at this time.

Check back there stats, videos of the goals, and more as soon as they become available.

This has been end-to-end stuff so far!

Half Time: New York Red Bulls 0 - 0 Houston Dynamo, Ching Leaves With Injury

It’s all square at half time between the New York Red Bulls and the Houston Dynamo with the score tied nil-nil.

The Dynamo have played aggressive, but well, and have limited the Red Bulls’ chances throughout the half, even managing to create a few of their own.

The main news from the half was the departure of Dynamo forward and captain Brian Ching, who left in the 39th minute after picking up what appeared to be an injury to the ribs in a challenge with Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. The Hawaiian forward made way for Cam Weaver who will give Houston a height advantage up front.

The other important news of the night was the tactical decision by Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear to play Corey Ashe at left back in place of either Kofi Sarkodie or Mike Chabala. Ashe brings the speed that is needed to handle Dane Richards and played very well throughout the half.

The best chance of the half came in the 28th minute when Brian Ching rattled the crossbar with a shot. The effort was the result of a Geoff Cameron flick-on following a Brad Davis freekick. Ching was unlucky to see his effort not hit the back of the net.

Neither team looks likely to make changes coming out of the lockerroom, and the Dynamo have to be happy with their effort so far.

Substitution: Ching Leaves Due To Injury, Cam Weaver Replaces Him

Dynamo captain Brian Ching left the game in the 39th minute after potentially breaking ribs in a collision with Buona Coundoul of the New York Red Bulls. Ching looked to be able to play on after the challenge, but pulled up after a few moments of play, and was taken out of the match.

This game was Ching’s first start since returning after injuring one of his hamstrings during the preseason.

Update

Injury: Ching Does Down With Rib Injury

In the 35th minute, Brian Ching went down with an injury to his ribcage after a nasty collision with Bouna Coundoul, the New York Red Bulls goalkeeper. Ching initially got up after the challenge, but went back down to the pitch in pain after jogging a few yards. The Dynamo forward looked like he was going to be substituted off for Cam Weaver, but decided to play on after receiving treatment from the Dynamo trainers.

Update

Chance: Ching Rattles Crossbar

Brian Ching fired a shot off of the New York Red Bulls cross bar following a Geoff Cameron pass from a Brad Davis set piece. Ching’s effort was the best effort of the game, so far, from either team.

Game Stream: Dynamo Travel To New York To Take On Red Bulls And DeRo

Houston's trip to New York marks the second road game in two weeks and another challenge for the Dynamo.

While the Red Bulls have four points in two games, their performance against the Columbus Crew last week was an anomaly.  Due to the international break, NYRB was forced to field a B-team roster in the absence of a number of key players.  That won't be the case tonight, as the Red Bulls will be with US Men's National Team starlets, Juan Agudelo and Tim Ream, and Jamaican national, Dane Richards

New York's squad could be strengthened further if newly acquired midfielder, Dwayne DeRosario, who was traded late in the week from Toronto FC and used to play for the Houston Dynamo, plays in tonight's match.  DeRosario was spotted at Red Bull Arena with his family this afternoon, though his status at this moment is unknown.

The Dynamo again will be forced to field a modified starting XI after Jermaine Taylor sprained his foot while on national team last weekend with the Jamaican national team.  Midfielder Geoff Cameron is also questionable for the game after picking up a hamstring sprain earlier in the week during practice (as of the most recent injury report).  Good new for Houston, though, as forward and team leader Brian Ching has fully recovered from his hamstring strain and should start up top alongside newcomer Jason Garey or Will Bruin.

Tonight's match will be a tough test for Houston; New York has been selected by many pundits (including myself) to top the Eastern Conference at the end of the season.  So what are the keys to tonight's game?  Well, let's take a look.

  • The Dynamo always seem to play better with Brian Ching on the field. This was evident against the Seattle Sounders last week, despite Ching's limited minutes in the match.  Ching may not be the most mobile player anymore, but he is the leader of the Dynamo and the entire team seems to be more relaxed when Ching is in the line-up.
  • Brad Davis again is a key player for Houston, but tonight against the Red Bulls, his importance may be more emphasized on what he does off of the ball.  Teams know that Davis is the key to Houston's attack, so they tend to focus their defensive resources on the left side of the pitch.  This leads to a defensive imbalance and increases the role of the right midfielder, which tonight will either be manned by Corey Ashe or Danny Cruz.  Davis then will be important both when he has the ball and when he doesn't and will have to draw defenders towards him to spread out New York's defense to create room for Ching and company to develop attacks.
  • Andre Hainault, who is expected to fill in for Jermaine Taylor alongside Bobby Boswell at centerback, will need to be firm in tonight's match.  Against the Union and the Sounders, Houston's defense played timid and looked disorganized early on in the games, and Hainault will need to settle early on against the Red Bulls.  If Houston can avoid the early goal, the team could return home with at least one point and build momentum for next week's game back in Houston.
