NBA Power Rankings 2012: Houston Climbs To The Middle Of The Pack

With the recent 114-106 win over the Washington Wizards, the Houston Rockets (6-7) have put themselves in a good position. After some early season struggles, the Rockets have won three straight and look to take of business versus some easier competition in the next few games.

On Tom Ziller's NBA Power Rankings that were released early Monday, he has the Rockets at No. 18.

Take note of the following, the Rockets are good enough to give anyone a game in this NBA this season. Of course, the Rockets are also bad enough to lose to anyone in the NBA. That's what a new head coach, a mash-up of talent and a crazy schedule will do to you.

A couple of takeaways for the road following the Rockets vs. Wizards clash:

  • Rockets swingman Courtney Lee missed his eighth straight game with a strained right calf.
  • Houston coach Kevin McHale fired Washington’s Flip Saunders when he was general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves in February 2005. It was their first on-court meeting as NBA coaches.
  • The Rockets have held double-digit leads in their last six games. Last year, they never had double-digit leads in more than five straight.

Rockets Vs. Wizards Final: Houston Overcomes John Wall's Monster Game, Beat Washington 114-106

The Houston Rockets are inching closer to becoming .500 team, as they were able to overcome a Herculean effort by John Wall to defeat the lowly Washington Wizards 114-106 in the Verizon Center on Monday afternoon.

Kevin Martin put up 25 points and 8 assists to lead the way for the Rockets while the intriguing frontcourt duo of Luis Scola and Samuel Dalembert combined for 38 points. Kyle Lowry also had a fine all-around game with an impressive line of 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

While Lowry did have an impressive stat line, his defense for the phenom John Wall was less than impressive. Wall had a phenomenal game as his 38 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds virtually kept the Wizards in the game all afternoon by himself. However, the Rockets never wavered and even with the Wizards surge in the fourth quarter, Houston was able to put the game out of reach.

The Rockets are now 6-7 on the season and with upcoming home games over the Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Hornets, there's a good chance Houston could be a game over .500 as they prepare for their showdown with the rival San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

Rockets Vs. Wizards Scoring Update: Houston Leads 58-54 At The Half

In a fast-paced up-and-down game played in the afternoon as a part of an NBA marathon in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Houston Rockets have a 58-54 lead against the Washington Wizards at the half.

Washington, like most young teams, doesn't play much defense, allowing Luis Scola and Kevin Martin to combine for 25 points on 8-15 shooting.

The play of the day so far though belongs to Houston rookie Chandler Parsons, who soared above the Wizards front-line for a tip-in dunk:

What has to be concerning for Houston is the defensive side of the ball, as the Wizards, with a 1-11 record and a -12.5 point differential, are staying in the game thanks to big scoring efforts from John Wall and Jordan Crawford.

The last thing you want to do with a team like Washington, especially at home, is let them stay in the game into the fourth quarter, which could give them the confidence to steal a rare victory from a Houston team that can't afford to not take care of business against what has been the NBA's worst team this season.
