Lance Berkman meets with Astros, wants to play in 2013

Bob Levey

Lance Berkman said he'd like to return in 2013, and called a meeting to discuss the possibility of a return to the Houston Astros. Berkman played the first 12 years of his career in Houston.

Lance Berkman initiated a meeting with the Houston Astros last week with hopes to play in 2013, according to the Astros' official website. Berkman also said that if he doesn't return to Major League Baseball next season, he plans on serving as a volunteer coach at Rice University, his alma mater.

At this point, no contract details have been discussed, but Berkman did state that he would only return to MLB if he receives what he considers fair market value. That stipulation applies to all teams, including the Astros. Berkman, drafted by the Astros in 1997, played the first 12 years of his career in Houston.

Berkman spent the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, but was limited to 81 at bats last season due to lingering knee issues. Berkman told MLB.com that he would be open to a DH role with the Astros, saying it might help limit the wear and tear on his body.
