NBA Standings 2012: Houston Holding Onto No. 8 Spot

The Western Conference playoff race is extremely tight with the No. 4 spot to the No. 9 spot separated by 1.5 games, so each and every game the rest of the way is huge for all teams. The Rockets are currently tied for the No. 8 spot with the Nuggets but could easily move up a few spots if they go on a short winning streak.

Even though the Rockets are tied with the Nuggets, the No. 8 spot belongs to the Rockets due to tiebreakers. Had the Rockets defeated the Mavericks on Saturday night they would be at the No. 6 spot, so that is how close the Western Conference playoff race is.

Rockets Vs. Mavericks Final Score: Houston Falls 101-99 In Overtime To Dallas

Even though the their were five players who scored in double figures for the Houston Rockets they fell short to the Dallas Mavericks 101-99 in overtime. Houston was without starting guards Kevin Martin and Kyle Lowry but Goran Dragic filled in nicely as a starter by leading the team with 24 points.

This game was extremely close throughout and the Rockets had to comeback from a four-point deficit with with 19 seconds left in regulation. Marcus Camby had a put back to put Houston within two and after a made free throw by Dirk Nowitzki the Mavericks were back up by three points. Then with three seconds left Chandler Parsons made the tying three-pointer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime it was more of the same with the game being close with the Mavericks taking a four-point lead with 18 seconds and Dragic did get the Rockets within two points with 14 seconds left, but the game winning three-pointer attempt by Chase Budinger was off the mark.

The loss for Houston dropped them out of a playoff spot and to the ninth spot.
