Shell Houston Open 2012 Update: Rain Suspends Play Thursday

Houston has been getting soaked in the past three weeks by rain, but this week, the rain hit in the afternoon and seems to have washed out the first day of the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club.

↵

Houston's favorite son Jeff Maggert shot a 6-under before the rain came to finish with a 66 in the first round. Maggert has missed five straight cuts, so the early success is a great sign for him to have some success at home.

↵

Only 51 players completed their rounds before the rain suspended play. They haven't officially called the tournament's first day, because there's still about four hours of daylight left. However, it's not a good sign for the rest of the day that most of the Houston-area baseball and softball teams have already postponed games for tonight.

↵

Carl Petterson and Angel Cabrera are your current leaders at 7-under. Johnson Wagner, who we discussed yesterday, is tied for 10th at 4-under while another Houston-area guy, Chris Stroud, is tied for 16th at 3-under. A trio of big names in Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and former University of Houston player Fred Couples are all tied at 1-under through three holes.
