Sam Houston State vs Southeastern Louisiana Baseball: Bearkats Clinch First Conference Title Since 1989

Sam Houston State won two of three games against Southeastern Louisiana this weekend on their way to the Bearkats' first conference championship in twenty three years.

The 'Kats currently sit alone atop the Southland Conference standings at 22-8 (34-16 overall) with a four game lead over SELA and only three conference games remaining.

The Southeastern sweep would have left them tied for first with SHSU with one week left to play, and the first game Saturday (due to rain on Friday) gave the Bearkats cause for concern, losing 2-4.

Sam Houston rebounded in exciting fashion in the second game of the double header by winning 3-2 on a walkoff RBI single from first baseman Ryan O'Hearn.

In the series finale on Sunday, the Bearkats got the party started early by scoring seven runs in the first two innings and never looking back on their way to an 8-3 win.

Sam Houston, who returned only three starters and replaced sixteen players coming into the season, remains unranked by Baseball America but is 29th according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. The Bearkats also received votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll, but were not ranked.

SHSU hosts #5 Rice in Huntsville on Tuesday before finishing up their championship regular season at Central Arkansas starting Thursday.
