2012 C-USA College Baseball Tournament: Everything You Need To Know

Rice and Houston travel to Pearl, MS this week for the Conference USA Tournament, and SBNation Houston has you covered on all of the pre-tourney info.

Click here for a full schedule of the 2012 C-USA Baseball Tournament

The Field

The tournament will consist of everybody but Marshall, who finished a half-game behind Houston. Unlike the SEC and Big 12 tournaments which are double elimination, the C-USA tournament will split the teams into two groups (or pods) with the winners playing for the championship:

Each team is guaranteed to play three games. Teams in each pod will play all three other teams in its pod. The team with the best composite record in each pod advances to the championship game. Two-way ties in a pod will be broken by head-to-head play. In the case of a three-way tie, the highest seed will advance.

Pod 1 will consist of #1 Rice, #4 Southern Miss, #5 Memphis, and #8 Houston. Pod 2 has #2 UCF, #3 Tulane, #6 East Carolina, and #7 UAB.

Who Are The Teams To Watch?

For the last 16 years, that question has been answered with "Rice", and this year is no different. The Owls are in good shape to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament after winning every series in C-USA play. It would be huge news if they aren't in the championship Sunday. Memphis has been on a tear lately, winning 11 of the last 14 with a series win over UCF and sweeps of UAB and Houston.UCF is the favorite to win Pod 2, but East Carolina could make a run and make it to the championship.

What Is This "Pearl, Mississippi"?

It's a suburb of Jackson, and home to Trustmark Park and the AA Mississippi Braves. They've got a great stadium and there's a Bass Pro Shop next door. That's about it. If you do go, eat at Parlor Market in downtown Jackson.

Can I Watch Any Of These Games On TV?

The championship will be aired by CBS Sports Network, and all other games will be streamed live on ConferenceUSA.com.

Rice Vs. UCF Baseball: Owls Win C-USA Title With 5-2 Win Over Black Knights

Rice captured another Conference USA title when they defeated Central Florida 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. John Simms earned the win for Rice as he pitched 5.1 innings, gave up only one run and struck out two batters. Tyler Duffy came into close out the game by pitching two innings and struck out five batters to earn his fifth save of the year.

The Rice offense started off hot by scoring four runs in the first four innings and the offense led by catcher Craig Manuel who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Shortstop Ford Stainback also had a big game by going 4-for-4 with a run and a RBI.

Saturday's game was the last series of the season for Rice and now up next is the Conference USA tournament that begins next week where Rice will be the top seed.

Rice Vs. UCF Baseball: Owls Drop Series-Opener 8-6

Rice and UCF baseball continued where they left off Thursday, but an Owl rally fell short in an 8-6 loss — the first game of a Friday doubleheader.

Thursday's game was suspended in the top of the fifth inning due to rain. No. 5 Rice was trailing 8-3 when the game was called. The three runs had been scored in the fifth. When the game got back underway on Friday, the Owls added another three runs in the frame, but didn't score again.

Matthew Reckling got the start on Thursday, but only lasted two-plus innings. No. 16 UCF scored five runs in the bottom of the third to jump out to a big lead. Zech Lemond gave up three runs (two earned) in the next inning as the Knights extended their lead to 8-0. Rice rallied in the two-day fifth inning, but it wasn't enough.

The Owls had six total hits from six different players. Jeremy Rathjen went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. The win puts UCF up a game on Rice in the C-USA standings. The Owls have a streak of 16 straight conference championships, but that could be in danger, now.

Rice Vs. UCF Baseball: Game 1 Suspended Due To Rain, Owls Trail 8-3

With the C-USA crown on the line this weekend, the monumental series between No. 5 Rice and No. 16 UCF got off to a hot start, but then was washed out.

Lightning and heavy rain suspended Thursday's opening game in the top of the fifth inning with UCF holding an 8-3 lead. The Knights scored five runs in the third and three in the fourth to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Rice scored three runs in the top of the fifth before the suspension. The game will continue at 3 p.m. on Friday and the second game will begin one hour after the completion of the first.

Matthew Reckling gave up five runs (four earned) in two innings in the start. Zech Lemond gave up three unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Two errors by Rice have resulted in a total of four unearned runs.

Michael Aquino went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Rice at the plate. Jeremy Rathjen went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Rice vs UCF Baseball: Owls Look To Extend Conference Championship Streak To 17

A three-game series with the Golden Knights are all that stands in the way of Rice and another season of total C-USA dominance.
