Astros Vs. Cardinals: Houston Blasted In 14-2 Loss

Something about rubber matches hasn't been good for the Astros.

Houston lost its eighth-straight rubber match, this one by a 14-2 score against the St. Louis Cardinals. J.A. Happ gave up four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings and picked up the loss. Houston led 2-0 after two innings, but the Cardinals scored three in the third and didn't look back.

Among bullpen arms, David Carpenter gave up a run in one inning of work, Rhiner Cruz gave up five in one inning, Wesley Wright gave up two in 1/3 of an inning and even outfielder Brian Bogusevic pitched an inning, but gave up two runs.

Jed Lowrie was the only Astro to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning.

Marwin Gonzalez Gets X-Rays On Injured Foot

Astros infielder Marwin Gonzalez was examined by a foot specialist on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Gonzalez left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with a bruised right heel. He was not in Thursday's starting lineup. From MLB.com:

"He came in and was a little tender," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "We took him to get some X-rays and see a doctor. I think it was a little more swollen than we anticipated and that's why we wanted to have a foot doctor check him out."

This season, Gonzalez is hitting .261 with three doubles and one home run.

Looking to take the rubber match and series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Astros trail 3-2 after four innings.

Starter J.A. Happ has given up three earned runs on three hits over the four innings.

Houston took the first lead when Jed Lowrie hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first. The Astros extended the lead to 2-0 when Chris Johnson doubled home Brett Wallace.

But the Cardinals scored three in the following frame thanks to three hits and two walks. Houston is 1-7 in rubber matches this season, losing the last seven.

Astros Vs. Cardinals: Game 3 Preview, TV Info And More

The Astros have faced a rubber game eight times already in the 2012 season. They're 1-7 in those games, and have lost seven in a row. They'll have another chance, and an opportunity to take a home series against the defending World Champs on Thursday, hammering home a rough road trip for St. Louis (the Cards are 3-6 entering the last day of an 11-game road trip). However, the Astros will face the Cards' ace, Lance Lynn, in the series finale.

Despite being in fifth place in the NL Central, the Astros are still above .500 - 12-10 - against the division so far this year.

Cardinals Vs. Astros, Final Score: Houston Rally Falls Short In 4-3 Loss

Despite a strong showing from starter Bud Norris, who struck out 12 batters in six innings as well outhitting St. Louis 12-6, the Astros failed to rally from a 4-0 deficit early in a 4-3 Cardinals win on Wednesday.

Norris was strong with his fastball, but was roughed up early for three runs in the first inning. Still, the Astros' pitching staff managed a season high 15 strikeouts in the game, but couldn't get the offense going until they were already down 4-0. Cardinals' starter Adam Wainwright threw four no-hit innings.

The Astros would rally, but it wasn't enough. Chris Johnson tripled in the sixth inning, and then scored on a Brett Wallace single. Wallace would score on a pinch-hit single by Brian Bogusevic. Jose Altuve's single scored Castro to trim the Cardinals' lead to one, 4-3, but Houston wouldn't be able to rally again.

Astros Vs. Cardinals: Houston Holds On For 9-8 Victory

The Astros were in control for most of Tuesday's game, but things got tense when the Cardinals scored four runs in the ninth to cut the lead to one.

But Houston got the final out to hold on for a 9-8 win in the series-opener.

A two-run homer from Justin Maxwell capped a four-run first inning as the Astros took a 4-1 lead. After extending the lead to 6-1, the Cardinals scored three in the third to cut the lead to two runs again. Houston scored one in the fourth, sixth and seventh to extend the lead to 9-4 heading into the ninth. That's when things got interesting.

David Carpenter came in to pitch and gave up two singles sandwiched around a strikeout and then a triple. He was pulled for closer Brett Meyers, who immediately gave up a two-run homer to Rafael Furcal. Carlos Beltran popped out, but Matt Holliday walked to put the tying run on. Allen Craig grounded out to shortstop to end the affair.

Lucas Harrell gave up four runs (three earned) over six innings in the start. Maxwell and Chris Snyder each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Astros have won two in a row since losing eight straight.
