Texas A&M Names Johnny Manziel Starting Quarterback

July 17, 2012; Hoover, AL, USA; Texas A&M Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin speaks during the 2012 SEC media days event at the Wynfrey Hotel.

Redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel has won the starting quarterback job in College Station.

Kevin Sumlin and the Texas A&M offensive staff have named redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel as the Aggies' starting quarterback, the school announced today. Manziel was in an offseason-long battle with sophomores Matt Joeckel and Jameill Showers for the job. Showers seemed to be the favorite for many, but Manziel's play in Saturday's scrimmage seemed to start tilting the scales.

The 6'1, 200-pound freshman was a three-star prospect from Kerrville, Texas and was ranked as the 22nd-best quarterback of the 2011 class, according to Scout.com.

Manziel is no stranger to making news in College Station, however. In late June, he was arrested after a fight broke out in the early morning between he and a near-50-year-old man. During the incident, Manziel was also found to have a fake ID showing he was older than 21.

Whatever happened there seems to be resolved, however, and it looks like Sumlin has his man to blitz the SEC with the Air Raid.
