College Football Rankings, Week 4: LSU Up To No. 2 In Coaches Poll Too

After the USC Trojans lost at Stanford, the USA Today coaches poll looks a lot like it did near the end of last season. The Alabama Crimson Tide are still no. 1, but the LSU Tigers moved up to No. 2 at the expense of USC. LSU even picked up five first place votes compared to 54 from Alabama.

Other Texas teams were ranked int he top 25 as well. Texas moved into the top ten at No. 10. TCU was at No. 16 this week after its first ever Big 12 victory.

Idaho Vs. LSU 2012: Tigers 'Sloppy At Times' In Blowout Win Over Vandals

The LSU Tigers manhandled the Idaho Vandals on Saturday night, turning a 28-14 halftime lead into a 63-14 final. Tigers quarterback Zach Mettenberger completed 17 of 22 pass for 222 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception, and running back Kenny Hilliard lead LSU on the ground with 116 yards on just 11 carries. Despite the domination on the stat sheet and the huge victory, the gang over at SB Nation's LSU blog And The Valley Shook saw some sloppy play on the field at times in the Tigers' easy victory:

Overall, this game reminded me a lot of LSU's opener. Sloppy at times. Not really bad. Even saying LSU really struggled would be a bit disingenuous here, because the first 60-point scoring output since 1997 came without much effort. Just...sloppy. The Tigers played like they knew they could drop the hammer on this team at any moment -- and while we'd all like to see a rampaging Mongol horde in purple & gold every week, the reality is we're still watching 85 college students -- if they get through a disinterested blowout without injury, then really the mission is accomplished. At the risk of an incredible cliché, the coaching staff will still have plenty to harp on over the next week.

LSU will next face Auburn, on Sept. 22 at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Idaho Vs. LSU 2012: Final Score And Game Recap

No. 3 LSU Tigers absolutely dominated the Idaho Vandals on Saturday night, 63-14, exerting their control in the second half and never looking back.

Idaho would pull to within 21-14 near the end of the first half after a Dominique Blackman touchdown pass to Jahrie Level, but LSU would score in the final seconds of the second quarter to ensure an upset was not in danger of occuring in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers would score 35 points in the second half, starting with a Lavar Edwards interception return for a touchdown just four minutes into the third quarter and an overpowering rushing attack that put up 250 yards on the ground for the game.

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger was 17-of-22 for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, with Kenny Hilliard leading the Tigers with 116 yards rushing on 11 carries.

The Vandals would manage just 213 yards of offense for the game and turned the ball over four times against the LSU defense.

LSU will take on Auburn next on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. CT, with coverage on ESPN.

Quarterback Zach Mettenberger started off the scoring for the Tigers with a 17-yard pass to Kadron Boone and LSU added to their lead on their ensuing possession with a 3-yard touchdown run by Alfred Blue. Mettenberger is 9-of-13 for 117 yards and two touchdowns through two quarters.

Idaho Vs. LSU 2012: Game Time, TV Schedule, Odds And More

The No. 3 LSU Tigers haven't had any trouble against non-conference opponents in 2012, and that's likely to continue when they face the winless Idaho Vandals on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers (2-0), who crushed the Washington Huskies 40-3 last week and have outscored their opponents 82-17 this season, don't have much to worry about with The Vandals, but head coach Les Miles told The Associated Press that the Tigers aren't taking their Week 3 matchup lightly.

"We do not take anybody lightly," Miles said. "If we are going to improve, our team has to make strides this week against this opponent. If we bring the intensity we need to, we'll accomplish something this Saturday."

The rushing game will be a battle of polar opposites. LSU is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation in rushing offense, averaging 279 yards per game, while the Idaho is ranked No. 122 with 37.9 yards per contest. The Vandals rushed for just six yards in their 20-13 loss to Bowling Green in Week 2.

The Tigers are favored by 42.5-points on Saturday, so it could get ugly early in Death Valley.

Game time, TV channel: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN 3

Point spread: LSU favored by 42.5
