Rice takes its 1-2 record into the Conference USA opener against Marshall (1-2, 0-0) at 3:30 p.m. CT in Houston.
The Owls were on the wrong side of a 56-37 thumping at the hands of host Louisiana Tech Sept. 15, a disappointing loss one week after a dramatic 25-24 win over Kansas.
The Thundering Herd are coming off a tough 27-24 loss vs. Ohio in Huntington, W.Va.
The Owls racked up 477 yards of offense, paced by junior quarterback Taylor McHargue, who threw for 205 yards and ran for 93, getting a part of all five of Rice's touchdowns (two passes, three rushes).
Offensive firepower from McHargue and junior running back Charles Ross, who rushed for 116 yards on 14 carries in the loss.
Rice's biggest challenge will be containing Marshall sophomore quarterback Rakeem Cato who, in three games this season, has 1,222 yards and eight touchdowns, including a 44-for-65 performance against Ohio, in which he threw for 432 yards and three touchdowns, along with one interception.
