Sam Houston State defeated Texas Southern Thursday night at BBVA Compass Stadium, 50-6. The Tigers only score came on a second quarter touchdown, but the extra point attempt was blocked and taken back to the opposite end zone by Bearkats defensive back Ken Jenkins for a safety.
Other than that one highlight for Texas Southern that quickly turned into one for Sam Houston State, it was all Bearkats in this one.
TSU won the pre-game coin toss and received the ball first. The Kats immediately began tackling the Tigers for losses and sacking the quarterback. In fact, by halftime, TSU had 10 plays go for a loss, while SHSU had just two.
With the Kats leading 33-6 to start the third quarter, all the No. 9-ranked SHSU squad could do was pile on. With freshman quarterback Chris Grett in the game, SHSU scored touchdowns with backup running backs Keshawn Hill and Ridgeway Frank.
Miguel Antonio converted on a field goal late in the game to cement the final the score.
For Sam Houston, the win snaps a two-game winning streak and it's the first victory over a Division I opponent this season. The Bearkats face rival Stephen F. Austin next Saturday in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods at Reliant Stadium.
TSU extended its losing streak to four games.
