Time Running Out With Astros' Draft Picks

While the Houston Astros have currently managed to sign 35 of this year's 50 draft picks, two very important players remained to be signed with the August 15th deadline looming right around the corner.

First-round pick George Springer (OF, Uconn) has been in negotiations with the Astros lately, but scouting director Bobby Heck anticipates that discussions with Springer will continue to the end.

"There's going to need to be significant movement on their end to do a deal, and we probably see this going down to Monday at some time."

Springer visited Houston last weekend for the first time, but he was only in town for a physical. He passed the medical examination and took a brief tour of Minute Maid Park in order to speed things up as the deadline approaches.

The Astros are also hoping to sign third-round pick Jack Armstrong (P, Vanderbilt), and it's reported that he is in Houston right now getting his physical taken care of. Armstrong has been dealing with elbow tenderness lately, but Bobby Heck feels comfortable that the results from the physical will pave the way for contract negotiations.

"Once we have the results back from the physical, which we think will be fine, we'll start exchanging numbers at that point in time, which has been the dad's desire all along -- to start negotiations when Jack's done playing."

Please sign these guys already, Astros fans don't need another reason to worry about their team's future success.
