The Houston Astros placed injured shortstop Jed Lowrie on the disabled list after he suffered ankle and knee injuries on Saturday night. Lowrie was injured when Gregor Blanco slid hard into his extended leg on a double-play attempt. Lowrie had to be helped from the field and was on crutches following the game. The Astros say that Lowrie has a sprained ankle and a damaged nerve in the leg.
To replace Lowrie on the roster, Houston activated shortstop Marwin Gonzalez from the disabled list. Gonzalez got the start in place of Lowrie on Sunday.
The Astros also placed Jason Castro on the disabled list with a sore leg. The move is retroactive to July 8 and Houston called up Carlos Corporan from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Astros starting short stop Jed Lowrie was taken out of the game against the San Francisco Giants in the third inning after he injured his ankle on a collision play at second base. Giants right fielder Gregor Blanco slid into Lowrie hard and knocked him hard down to the ground.
Lowrie was down on the ground holding his knee, but the diagnosis was Lowrie's ankle. Prior to leaving the game Lowrie was 0-for-2 from the plate.
Brian Bixler replaced Lowrie at shortstop and also took his No. 3 spot in the lineup. So far Bixler has gone 0-for-1 from the plate and has also struck out one time.
