The Big East conference is looking to stay relevant and survive as a strong BCS league and today the league had a teleconference and the league decided they want to expand to 12 teams. The teams who have been reported to join the Big East are the Temple Owls, Boise St. Broncos, Navy Midshipmen, Air Force Falcons, SMU Mustangs, Central Florida Knights, Villanova Wildcats and Houston Cougars.
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Houston is definitely in the discussion to join the Big East:
"UH is absolutely in the mix," the person said on condition of anonymity. "SMU is in the mix. Air Force is definitely in the mix. There's a lot of people that like Central Florida."
"People see UH as having turned the corner a little bit," the person said.
Houston is an emerging candidate due to their improved play on the field, increased home attendance, being in a large television market and the aggressive fundraising for a new stadium.
The same Big East representative who has knowledge of their expansion targets does not have a timeline on when invites will come, but they did say it would move "fairly quickly."
