With a chance to keep their conference title hopes alive, the Houston Cougars fell at home to the visiting Tulsa Golden Hurricane by the score of 41-7 at Robertson Stadium. Tulsa remained undefeated in conference play while Houston now falls to an even 3-3 in conference games.
Saturday's defeat had to be disheartening to Houston, who were unable to put points on the board until garbage time at home against a conference opponent. In addition, the Cougars allowed a whopping 41 points.
Houston committed four turnovers, including three interceptions from sophomore quarterback David Piland. The sophomore completed fewer than half of his pass attempts against Tulsa's defense. Piland was benched following his third interception, which was returned for a touchdown.
While no one dominated the game for Tulsa, it was a combined effort from the running game that impressed. Five different players rushed for 20 yards or more, including quarterback Cody Green. Despite his struggles in the passing game, Green rushed for a pair of touchdowns.
Box Score Hero: Part of the dominant running game, Alex Singleton rushed for 78 yards in 16 carries and two touchdowns. As a team, Tulsa picked up nearly 300 yards on the ground.
Rankings Ramifications: Neither team should expect to be ranked, but Tulsa will remain undefeated in conference play at a perfect 6-0 on the season.
But Did They Cover? Tulsa opened as 2.5-point favorites and easily covered the spread as road favorites against a conference opponent.
Next Week's Schedule: Tulsa will head home and prepare to host the visiting UCF Knights while Houston will hit the road and visit Marshall.
