According to several different sources including InsideHoops, the Houston Rockets are planning to sign former Iona point guard Scott Machado to a contract after watching him do very well for the team in their summer-league games. According to the reports, Machedo will likely sign a three-year contract with the team on Thursday.
The undrafted 22-year-old guard excelled at Iona, putting up the highest average assist number in NCAA last season with 9.9 per game. He put up solid numbers and showed off his great passing game -- part of the reason that he put up so many assists in the college game -- with the Rockets in the summer league, with eight points and 5.6 assists per game.
Machado will be one of many players trying to earn the backup PG spot behind Jeremy Lin on the Rockets roster.

Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale has added Dean Cooper to his coaching staff, according to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune.
Cooper has spent the past two seasons as the Director of Player Development for the Portland Trailblazers, and worked with the Minnesota Timberwolves before that. He began his NBA career with the Rockets in 1999 as a video coordinator and scout. A couple of years after that, he became an assistant coach under Rudy Tomjanovich.
McHale guided the Rockets to a 34-32 finish in 2012, which placed them just two games behind the Utah Jazz for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. His team has had a busy offseason, as they pried Jeremy Lin away from the New York Knicks, made a run at Dwight Howard and dealt away Kyle Lowry and Marcus Camby.

It's being reported that C.J. Miles will join the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2012-13 NBA season, after setting aside the interest of several other teams. Among those interested in Miles were the Houston Rockets, but it seems as though he wants to play in Cleveland for the opportunity to be a more impact player for a young group.
C.J. Miles' deal with Cleveland Cavaliers is for two years, source says.
— Brian T. Smith (@tribjazz) August 3, 2012
Multiple teams — Lakers, Rockets, Bucks, Mavericks — showed interest in Miles. He chose Cavaliers not because of money, but opportunity.
— Brian T. Smith (@tribjazz) August 3, 2012
Miles was drafted by the Jazz in 2005 after playing his high school ball at Dallas Skyline. He's averaged 8.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in his seven-year career.

One thing the media has trouble with is letting things go, especially when we've framed something out of context and have yet to understand the particular angle of a story we're covering.
That's what's happening with this idea that Carmelo Anthony somehow drove Jeremy Lin out of New York, rather than the actual ridiculous contract he referred to just days before the Knicks declined to match the Rockets' three-year, $25 million offer to the young point guard.
When Anthony called Lin's deal ridiculous, the media took that as him not believing Lin was worth the money or the effort to keep him (likely true, by the way). Casual and urban vernacular was never considered here, as the term "ridiculous" is often used loosely in regular conversation, and the context definitely applied here when you think about the way Houston structured Lin's deal.
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News wrote that Melo's Olympic teammates were joking with him about the whole madness of the conversation on the team bus in Barcelona. Here's a quote from Tyson Chandler:
"Guys on the bus were laughing and giving him some flak. But Melo said, ‘I liked the kid. I wanted him back.' You say that on the bus when no cameras are around and you know that's how he really feels."
Melo has said from the beginning that he's proud of Lin and that the deal in Houston was something he couldn't refuse.

Linsanity will officially invade Houston this coming fall, when Jeremy Lin suits up as a member of the Houston Rockets for the first time. The Rockets and Rockets fans are no stranger to Asian superstars, as Yao Ming helped pave the way for other Asian basketball players.
Over time, Lin and Yao developed a friendship. Yao maintains that he did not play a role in Lin's decision to head to Houston, but he's pleased with the outcome.
"Only he knew what he needed most," Yao said in a telephone interview from China. "He had to make the decision on his own. I didn't want to affect him too much."
"I'm so glad the Knicks didn't match the contract," Yao said. "Houston is a good place for Jeremy to come to. It's a good fit because both sides can provide the best opportunity for each other."
Yao recalled that the environment in a smaller market helped make him a better player.
Houston is certainly a much smaller market than New York. If the smaller environment helps Lin succeed like it did Yao, the Rockets will likely be very pleased with their addition of Lin.

Former New York Knicks head coach and team president for some reason is still a voice that owner James Dolan relies on even though Thomas is no longer with the team, and was not productive when running it. The latest about Thomas and the Knicks surrounded Jeremy Lin, and Thomas did not think Lin was worth being paid $25 million to be a point guard:
Most tellingly, perhaps, Isiah Thomas is close to Dolan, Wesley, Grunwald, Woodson and others with the Knicks, according to sources. The former Knicks president and coach is still a very influential voice in Dolan's ear, and those behind the scenes say he is lukewarm toward Lin.

The Jeremy Lin signing is creating a lot of buzz around the Rockets franchise. So the new team's new TV partner, CSN Houston, and radio partner, KBME (790 AM), are among the beneficiaries.
The Rockets had been on Fox Sports Houston and KILT (610 AM) for years, but moved to new stations following the 2011-12 season. A marquee signing is a great way to increase viewers and listeners. From the Houston Chronicle:
"It will definitely have a positive impact, especially since this is the rollout of a new regional sports network, so the timing is very good," Chris Bevilacqua, founder of Bevilacqua Media Co. and media rights adviser to the Pac-12, Big 12, NHL and other leagues, said in an e-mail.
"Lin will bring real excitement and visibility to CSN's distribution and advertising sales efforts."

Houston has already made headlines with the acquisition of Jeremy Lin in free-agency and using their amnesty provision on Luis Scola who was then picked up by the Phoenix Suns.
The Rockets have been one of the more active teams this summer and now have a team with some very good pieces. They still have an abundance of frontcourt players, but don't be surprised if more moves are on the horizon for this team.

One look at the media blitz of the acquisition of Jeremy Lin by the Houston Rockets from the New York Knicks shows exactly what sort of attention this one maneuver can bring to the team. So it's perhaps not surprising to hear that Rockets owner Leslie Alexander is finding a bit of solace in his new point guard given the team's inability to make any other impact moves this offseason (read: Dwight Howard).
"I love it," Alexander said of the move. "I think it's great for the city of Houston. It's great for the fans. I think a team needs to have that attention to attract free agents and do what we have to do to win. It helps. It always helps (the business), but the real reason is it helps to attract free agents. They'll want to play with Jeremy, but also they want to be someplace they will be on TV, they can market themselves, all that stuff."
Alexander wasn't just commenting on the sake of the city and interest in the team, however. He was also focused on what Lin brings to the court.
"I think he's going to be a great addition for the team," Alexander said. "I think he's going to be a great player in the league - very good to great. It was very risky and very hard to do. It worked out in our favor, thank God. We changed the team completely from last year. It's almost a whole new team. You can see in summer league how good the young guys are. I think the future is really, really good."
Lin averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists last year for the Knicks.

Is he worth it? How will he fit on this roster?
10 months ago Update 0 comments
In a revealing interview with SI.com, the newest Houston Rocket opened up about the free agent process and gave several interesting quotes:
"Honestly, I preferred New York," Lin says. "But my main goal in free agency was to go to a team that had plans for me and wanted me. I wanted to have fun playing basketball. ... Now I'm definitely relieved."
This is a great example of why honesty is pretty overrated when it comes to athletes and the media.
That being said, it's pretty obvious to even the most casual observer that while Lin wanted to stay in New York, the Knicks weren't nearly as interested in bringing him back.
The NBA is a business, as Lin assuredly realized when he was cut by both the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets in the span of less than a season.
He'll certainly have plenty of motivation as a Rocket, and I imagine the next time he gives an interview, he'll be gushing about the franchise and his future with it.

With the Jeremy Lin signing official, now would be a good time to see the various reactions around the internet.
First up is Tom Martin from our Houston Rockets blog The Dream Shake, who is excited what the Lin signing means for the Rockets franchise as a whole:
The Rockets finally got a big name free agent, and they stole him from THE major market in the country. Lin isn't the star free agent on the court that the Rockets have coveted, but he certainly is a star in name that will improve Houston's standing on a national stage.
Next is Zach Lowe from SI.com's Point Forward blog, who explains why Lin meant so much to the Knicks, and what Rockets fans might expect when next season rolls around:
He’s an outstanding perimeter quarterback who makes the smartest skip passes in the league, and he’ll toss better-timed and more creative entry passes than Lin could deliver to forwards Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. But let’s not pretend that the Knicks can count on Felton or Kidd to run dynamic pick-and-rolls with center Tyson Chandler next season and dive into the lane, draw the defense and find last season’s NBA’s leader in three-point percentage, forward Steve Novak, spotting up in the corner.
Randy Harvey at the Houston Chronicle just wonders if Jeremy Lin is worth that much money when the Rockets released him last season:
So Houston is now committed to pay $25.1 million over the next three years to a point guard they sent away less than seven months ago for zero in return.
Now I didn’t go to MIT—I can’t even spell it—but I doubt that’s the kind of business the Rockets’ general manager, Daryl Morey, was taught when he was earning his MBA there.
And I sure hope it’s not the kind of business he taught when he was the professor of a class there called "Analytical Sports Management."
If Lin doesn’t work out for the Rockets, students of that class in the future will be studying this deal like aspiring petroleum engineers study "Deepwater Horizon."
Sam Amick of SI knows that this is a huge risk for the Rockets, but the rewards will be just as big if Lin is able to produce:
Lin is no Yao Ming, of course, but he is the closest thing the Rockets have had to an international attraction since the Chinese center retired in July 2011. He's sure to be good for the Rockets' business, but Lin's basketball contributions, or lack thereof, will certainly be scrutinized as he rejoins an organization that is still pushing hard to get Howard.
The Rockets -- who, like the Warriors, cut Lin last season before the undrafted, NBA Development League product had his meteoric rise in New York -- are well aware that this is their latest calculated risk. Only time will tell if it pays off, but Lin will now face widespread skepticism from the many players and even coaches who don't think a player with a 25-game track record of success is worthy of such a generous contract.

For those who have access and can check it out now, James Dolan, owner of the New York Knicks among other mega-properties of value in NYC, also has his own rock band on the side known as JD & The Straight Shot. They bill themselves as a classic rock band with their own Wikipedia page and discography listed. That's key because someone missing Jeremy Lin took it upon themselves to alter Dolan's musical legacy.
Just in case something changes -- given the nature of Wikipedia, you can check out an example below of a city mourning the loss of Lin to the Houston Rockets. Or perhaps Dolan really is Linsane himself and recorded an ode to him even several years ago. Either way, it's comical the lengths some people are going to talk about the loss of Lin.

Linsanity is officially coming to Houston.
After earlier reports that the New York Knicks would not match Houston's offer sheet for Lin, Rockets GM Daryl Morey confirmed the move.
Welcome to Houston @JLin7! We plan to hang on this time. You will love #RedNation
— Daryl Morey (@dmorey) July 18, 2012
Lin also confirmed his move to Houston on Twitter.
Extremely excited and honored to be a Houston Rocket again!! #RedNation
— Jeremy Lin (@JLin7) July 18, 2012
Much love and thankfulness to the Knicks and New York for your support this past year...easily the best year of my life #ForeverGrateful
— Jeremy Lin (@JLin7) July 18, 2012
This officially ends a dramatic saga that had unfolded over recent weeks. The Knicks had longed vowed to match any offer sheet for the popular Lin, but the Rockets put in what some have called a "poison pill," by offering Lin $14.8 million in the third and final year of the contract, which would have made the Knicks subject to the luxury tax.
But once the Knicks acquired Raymond Felton, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Lin's future in New York. Now, the point guard returns to his old NBA team with a boatload more confidence — and money.

Jeremy Lin is coming to Houston. The New York Knicks have officially dropped out of contract deliberations with the Harvard graduate, according to a post by New York Times writer Howard Beck.
Posting momentarily to nytimes.com: Lin will be a Rocket. Knicks deliberations over.
— Howard Beck (@HowardBeckNYT) July 17, 2012
The third year of the offer sheet that Lin signed, worth $14.8 million, is the likely reason why the Knicks were unwilling to match the Rockets' offer. That amount would have had the Knicks likely subject to the luxury tax.
Lin played 35 games last season with the Knicks, starting 25. In that time, he averaged 14.6 points per game with 6.2 assists per game and a shooting percentage of 44.6%. He also averaged 3.6 turnovers per game, so he is going to have to limit those in order to become a great point guard.

You read the headline correctly. Carmelo Anthony says he wants the Knicks to be able to work a deal with Jeremy Lin, whose $25.1 million offer sheet with the Rockets shows that the point guard out of Harvard could very well find himself playing in Houston for the team that cut him almost a year ago.
Melo made news by calling Houston's offer ridiculous, but perhaps that quote was taken out of context. The deal was ridiculous because the Rockets did it out of desperation after losing both of their point guards from last year. Ridiculous is also slang terminology for something massive or maybe even unprecedented for a particular situation, which the Lin contract fits.
This is what Anthony said via Ken Berger at CBSSports.com after Team USA handled the Brazil team on Monday night:
"I hope we can get it done, man," Anthony said. "I would love to see him back. Honestly, I would deflinitey love to see him back. But knowing the business of basketball, it's kind of a tough situation for both parties. For Jeremy, I know that he definitely wants to be back in New York and (Madison Square Garden chairman) James Dolan definitely wants him back. But it's just a matter of figuring it out at this point."
"I always get backlash; it's nothing new. It was ridiculous for them to do what they did as far as throwing that out there and making it tough on us to sign him back. That's why it's called free agency, though."

Luis Scola is on a lot teams wish list in the amnesty wire. The most recent reports indicate Luis Scola could be joining former Rockets point guard Goran Dragic with the Phoenix Suns.
Source says Phoenix's winning amnesty wire bid for forward Luis Scola was three years, $13.5 million combined.
— Sam Amick (@sam_amick) July 16, 2012
Losing Scola, Dragic and Kyle Lowry in one offseason is already unseemly, but the rebuilding process and pursuit of premiere talent had to begin at some point. It would still be interesting to see Dragic and Scola playing together with the Suns next season, if were to happen.
And the Rockets would still be paying Scola.

Does the hype match up with reality when compared to his peers?
10 months ago Update 0 comments
When news leaked on Sunday that it was unlikely that the New York Knicks would match the Houston Rockets offer for Jeremy Lin, the NBA world was shocked. Included in those should be Lin, who, according to the Yahoo! Sports, would like to stay in the Big Apple.
"He did not see this happening," Peter Diepenbrock, Lin’s coach at Palo Alto (Calif.) High School, told Yahoo! Sports. "He sounded surprised. He loves the New York fans. To have the experience that he had for the two months and for that to be over with, that’s quite a shock to the system. I think he really believed the Knicks would match whatever offer he got."
Regardless of how Lin feels, it seems as though he will be suiting up in Houston next season.

The New York Knicks have been saying all along that they were going to bring back guard Jeremy Lin, and Knicks head coach Mike Woodson said last Wednesday that Lin would be his starting point guard. Things have changed since Wednesday, and even more so Saturday night as the Knicks acquired guard Raymond Felton from the Portland Trail Blazers in a sign-and-trade deal.
That move made it less likely the Knicks would match the Rockets offer, but now there is a team source that told ESPN New York's Ian Begley that the Knicks are not going to keep Lin:
... the third year of the Rockets' offer -- worth $14.8 million -- makes it unlikely the Knicks would match. If the Knicks were to match the offer, they would also be subject to a luxury tax in the third year, bringing their total out-of-pocket cost for Lin to approximately $30 million in 2014-2015.
The Knicks fans are definitely not taking this well as there is an online petition demanding that management match the Rockets offers.

While Jeremy Lin is said to be upset about the news of the New York Knicks acquiring Raymond Felton (and thus likely not matching Lin's offer sheet from the Houston Rockets), Lin's pal Carmello Anthony doesn't seem too torn up, giving some suspect quotes to the AP while at Team USA's practice in D.C. this weekend:
"Asked if he could envision Lin being with the Knicks next season, Anthony said: "At this point there's a lot going on. I stay away from that part right now. I would love to see him back, but I think he has to do what's best for him right now."
"It's not up to me," Anthony said with a laugh. "It's up to the organization to say they want to match that ridiculous contract that's out there."
Elsewhere in the report, Anthony said he's excited about the potential Felton brings to the Knicks. Just for your own reference, Lin averaged 17.9 points a game during his "Linsanity" phase that took over New York and the national sports media at large, while Felton averaged 17.1 on his previous run with the Knicks (he was in the trade for Anthony) and none of the spotlight.

Despite many plot twists, we're nearing an end in the ongoing Lin saga
10 months ago Update 0 comments
The New York Knicks acquired Raymond Felton and veteran forward Kurt Thomas from the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night through a trade, and this move could possibly mean that the Knicks may not match the Rockets offer sheet to Jeremy Lin.
The Knicks had pledged to match an offer up to a ridiculous $1 billion and head coach Mike Woodson said that Lin would definitely would return, but now that they have acquired Felton they may no longer be in need of matching the Rockets offer for Lin. Plus the Knicks just brought in Jason Kidd so retaining Lin may not make sense.
This also should put an end to the hide-and-seek game that the Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald is playing with the Rockets by not allowing the Rockets give him Lin's offer sheet.

The New York Knicks are making it very difficult for the Houston Rockets to deliver the offer sheet on Jeremy Lin. The paper work must be delivered to Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald, but he has been a tough man for the Rockets to track down.
Reading on what is transpiring on the Rockets attempt to deliver the paper work is turning into a comedy, and is being described by Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
Rockets so far unable to hand deliver Lin offer sheet. Knicks refused to accept at team hotel. Glen Grunwald not at practice yest, gm today.

Rockets FedExed offer sheet to Knicks offices in NY, but league said GM Glen Grunwald must receive it himself. Clock to match at standstill.

This is possibly the best tweet about the hilarity of the Rockets trying to deliver the offer sheet:
Warmer...warmer...cold. RT @seth_rosenthal: Glen Grunwald will match Jeremy Lin's offer sheet once you find his secret hiding spot!

Point guard Jeremy Lin officially signed an offer sheet from the Houston Rockets on Friday, giving the New York Knicks three days to match.
The Knicks have long vowed to match an offer, but a new detail could make the New York question things a little bit.
The Rockets fully guaranteed all three years of the contract and backloaded the deal, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The Rockets improved their offer to Lin by fully guaranteeing all three years on the contract, worth $25.1 million, a person with knowledge of the deal said. The Rockets backloaded the deal with $14.9 million due to Lin in the third season, making it a much greater luxury tax hit for the Knicks if they match.
After Goran Dragic signed with Phoenix and Kyle Lowry was traded to the Raptors, the Rockets need help at point guard, and Lin could move into a starting role.

Jeremy Lin finally will sign the offer sheet from the Rockets, giving the New York Knicks three days to match, according to Howard Beck of the New York Times.
Jeremy Lin will likely sign his $28.8 mil offer sheet w/Houston on Friday, I'm told. That will start 3-day clock for Knicks to match.

The Knicks have long said they would match any offer for the point guard, who captivated the country last season with "Linsanity," before an injury ended his season.
By letting him sign an offer sheet, many have theorized that the Knicks actually allowed a fair market price to be set for Lin, rather than going back-and-forth with him directly. The New York Post reported earlier in the month that the Knicks thought Houston's offer sheet was surprisingly low.
The Post reported on July 6 the Knicks would match the Rockets' offer. An NBA source familiar with the Knicks' thinking said of Houston's offer sheet: "It wasn't so bad."

The hope - or threat - of Linsanity on the 610 is likely over, as the New York Knicks are expected to match Houston's offer to Jeremy Lin on Thursday, keeping him in Manhattan.
10 months ago Update 0 comments
After trading Kyle Lowry to the Toronto Raptors last week and extending a qualifying offer to New York Knicks point guard, Jeremy Lin, that the Knicks are expected to match, the Houston Rockets still find themselves in desperate need of a point guard.
Enter Aaron Brooks.
Brooks, who once played for the Rockets, took his game to China last season as a result of last summers NBA lockout. But now that he's back stateside, and with the Phoenix Suns rescinding their qualifying offer and making him an unrestricted free-agent, a move to the Rockets makes sense for both parties.
According to Houston Rockets beat writer, Jonathan Feigen, Brooks was in Houston for a wedding recently and met with head coach Kevin McHale and general manager Daryl Morey (without his agent present) about a possible return:
Aaron Brooks on potentially returning to Houston. "It’s a possibility. I haven’t had any conversations with anybody else."

The Houston Rockets have already been rumored at bringing back former guard Aaron Brooks. On Sunday Rockets head coach reportedly meet with Brooks.
Word is Rockets coach Kevin McHale had an evening visit on this Sunday with a former Rocket traded before McHale got there: Aaron Brooks
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 9, 2012
The Rockets are in need of some more guards and Brooks was with the Rockets just a year and a half ago before he was traded to the Phoenix Suns.
Brooks was a restricted free agent, but the Suns withdrew their qualifying offer which now makes Brooks an unrestricted free agent. This allows Brooks to sign with any team and the Suns can not retain his rights by matching an offer.
This past season Brooks did not play in the NBA, but rather he played professionally in China.

The Houston Rockets currently have a need for a point guard after the departure of Goran Dragic and the trade of Kyle Lowry. It is that vacancy and the opportunity to capture a starting job that is most intriguing to free agent Ramon Sessions.

Sessions split the 2012 season in Cleveland and Los Angeles with the Lakers. He averaged 11.3 points and 5.5 assists overall although his numbers with the Lakers were better. The Rockets have also showed interest in bringing back Aaron Brooks after the struck out at acquiring Jeremy Lin from New York.
