Former Houston Texan Morlon Greenwood To Make Boxing Debut

If I recall correctly, this story has been floating around for a while, that Morlon Greenwood has turned to boxing. On Thursday night, he'll make that debut in a bout at the Houston Club. How has the transition been, you ask?

"You don’t really hit someone with your hands, you hit them with your shoulder pads in football," Greenwood said. "Here you learn the technique. I think it was a pretty easy transition for me. I had a pretty good coach and I took the right steps — learning the technique and learning to box and punch before moving on to sparring.

"It’s only been a year of training and I’m learning how to box a lot faster than a lot of people that have been boxing for a few years, so we’ll see."

One of the best sports books I've read is Ghosts of Manilla by Mark Kram, about the Ali-Frazier fights. It's a great look at a sport that really peaked before my time. It's still fascinating to watch a great boxing match and to see guys get into the sport.

Let's hope Greenwood's experience is a good one and leads to a successful second career.
