Texas A&M, South Carolina Could Become Permanent SEC Rivals

As talks rage on regarding the future of SEC football schedules, it looks like the eastern and western most teams in the new 14-team conference could be paired up as permanent cross-division opponents. The ABC TV affiliate for Columbia, South Carolina caught up with South Carolina A.D. Harris Pastides at the SEC Womens Basketball Tournament in Nashville over the weekend, and he had some interesting comments about the future pairings of cross-division rivalries:

"Arkansas is a long way off. Arkansas and Missouri have kind of buddied up because they are neighboring states and wanted to play each other," Pastides said. "That left the opportunity for us to think about Texas A&M, I'd love to know what the fans think."

"If all goes the way I think it will, we'll probably be swapping Arkansas for Texas A&M in the fall," said Pastides.

Since the SEC expanded in 1992 with addition of Arkansas and Carolina, the two teams have been awkwardly paired as cross-division rivals. While Missouri certainly makes more sense for the Hogs in terms of geography (as much as having Mizzou in the Eastern Division can be considered sensical), A&M and the Gamecocks are about as far-flung a "rivalry" as the SEC could produce.

Ready to hop in the car for a road trip? It's only a scant 1,035 miles from campus to campus!

Texas A&M, Arkansas To Meet On Campus In 2012, 2013 Then Return To Dallas

Prior to the Texas A&M Aggies joining the SEC they had agreed to a long-term series to play the Arkansas Razorbacks at Cowboys Stadium, but now with Texas A&M heading to the SEC the series in Dallas was in question. Now those questions have been answered with the two schools playing on their home campuses for the next two seasons and then they will continue the series at Cowboys Stadium for seven years starting in 2014.

The 2012 game will be played at Texas A&M with the 2013 game being played at Arkansas. With this game being played at Texas A&M in 2012 it drastically changes how the home schedule looked over a week ago when the Aggies were slated to have only four home games, and now that number is up to six for the 2012 season.

Texas A&M Finalizes 2012 Football Schedule With Sam Houston State

Texas A&M has finalized their 2012 football schedule - their first as a member of the Southeastern Conference - by adding FCS opponent Sam Houston State to its previously open November 17 date.

Sam Houston State is coming off of one of its best seasons in school history, finishing 14-1 and making its first-ever appearance in the FCS NCAA Championship, where they suffered their only loss of the season to North Dakota State. It's unlikely SHS will be able to run through the regular season undefeated in 2012, as they'll also travel to Baylor on September 15.

The addition of Sam Houston State locks in 12 opponents for A&M, with Louisiana Tech, SMU and South Carolina State rounding out the non-conference slate, a SEC Western Division slate of Arkansas (TBD location) Ole Miss (away), LSU (home), Auburn (away), Mississippi State (away) and Alabama (away), as well as games against the SEC's Eastern Division - Florida (home) and Missouri (home).

One detail is yet to be ironed out, however - the location of the game between the Aggies and Arkansas. The two teams had been signed for a decade-long contract to play a non-conference, neutral site game in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Now as division rivals in the SEC, that deal is be re-examined, with locations for 2012 and 2013 in discussions.

The addition of SHS gives A&M five official home games in 2012. With Arkansas still to be determined, the Aggies play five true road games and a "neutral site" opener against Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., on August 30.

Here's the updated 2012 A&M football schedule:

Texas A&M Updates Opponents For 2012 Football Schedule

Texas A&M's maiden voyage through the Southeastern Conference is starting to resemble a very long road trip. A&M announced this week that it will add an away game at Louisiana Tech and host FCS member South Carolina State, while dropping FCS member McNeese State. Currently A&M has only four games in College Station on its 2012 schedule.

Both sets of Bulldogs will round out the month of September for the Aggies, with A&M opening at Louisiana Tech at a "neutral site" - the Independence Bowl in Shreveport. The game will be played on August 30, a Thursday night, although no official TV partner has been named yet for the game. Since the non-conference game is designated as road game for A&M, it doesn't fall into the automatic broadcast agreement for the SEC.

The addition still leaves the A&M with one hole in their schedule, a TBA date they've listed as November 17, meaning they'll take a bye week on October 13 between games against Ole Miss and LSU. Also yet to be determined is the location of the Aggies' game against now-division foe Arkansas, a contest that, before SEC expansion, was part of a ten-year contract at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Texas A&M Nearing Financial Settlement With Big 12, According To Report

Texas A&M University will hold a conference call Monday to "to negotiate and execute a settlement agreement with the Big 12 Conference and its members," according to the Dallas Morning News.

Both the Aggies and Missouri must "settle up" with the Big 12 before officially joining the Southeastern Conference this summer. A&M President R. Bowen Loftin will negotiate the exit of the Aggies. The Morning News reports that exit could come at a substantial price:

Under the Big 12's bylaws, A&M could be liable for 90 percent of its conference revenue for the last two seasons, estimated at about $28 million. Baylor president Ken Starr, Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and Kansas State president Kirk Schultz make up the three-person Big 12 negotiating committee.

Loftin has cited the exit fees paid by Nebraska and Colorado when they exited the league in 2011 as precedent for a significantly reduced amount.

A&M is scheduled to officially become a member of the Southeastern Conference on July 1. Missouri has yet to reach an agreement to exit the Big 12.

Report: A&M Receives Letter From Big 12

In addition to the letter Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin sent to the Big 12 on Wednesday, detailing the university's plans to leave the Big 12 in favor of another conference, the Aggies also received a letter from Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe detailing the process in leaving the conference.

From the sound of things, that mainly includes a monetary penalty. It's always all about the money, after all. In this report, the numbers A&M stands to gain just in money from the conference increases by about $8 million. That does not include any money from a renegotiated TV contract, which the Aggies would be free to do after making the switch.

According to this report in the Bryan/College Station Eagle, the next step for A&M would be to officially apply for membership in the SEC. That would then trigger a vote from the current members and three-fourths of the member institutions would need to approve A&M as the newest member.

The last interesting thing about this is that the Aggies wanted to have this process finalized before the Sunday game against SMU. However, it looks like the switch won't be made official until next week. Any conference affiliation switch would not take effect until after the 2011-2012 season.
