Could The Texas Tech Vs. Texas A&M Rivalry Go Away Forever?

Eddie_maisonet_medium

A rivalry that was first consummated back in 1927 could possibly have its entire history left in the dust if two schools can't come to an agreement soon. The Texas A&M Aggies and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will informally divorce at the end of the season as the Aggies take their talents to SEC this summer, but talks have broken down on keeping the rivalry ongoing.

College Football Recruiting Rankings, 2012: Texas A&M Makes A Strong SEC Debut

The Texas A&M Aggies might have this whole Southeastern Conference thing down already: one of the conference's newest members ended National Signing Day 2012 at No. 14 in the country, ahead of all but five of their new neighbors in SB Nation's Top 25 ranking of this year's recruiting classes.

The SB Nation recruiting class ranking is an average of the four major recruiting services' rankings (Rivals, Scout, 24/7 and ESPN). Based on those numbers, the Aggie class of 21 commitments finished No. 14 with very little debate among the four services (A&M graded out as 13th, 15th, 14th, and 17th in the four rankings).

While A&M made a strong showing nationally, it's interesting to note the disparity between their new home in the SEC and their former, possibly less intimidating conference in the Big 12. The Big 12 produced only three teams in the Top 25, good for one third of the SEC's offering (nine total schools, the most of any conference). Had the Aggies stayed, their class would've trailed only blood-rival Texas (No. 2) and Oklahoma (No. 9). Texas Tech (No. 24) was the only other Big 12 team to even place.

Instead, A&M's commendable efforts are good for only fourth place... in their division. Alabama (No. 1), LSU (No. 11) and Auburn (No. 13) all assembled better classes, plus SEC Eastern Division Champion Georgia (No. 10) and Florida (No. 3).

Johnson should be considered a leader for announcement of the day, as he returned fire when asked by the ESPNU panel about his pick, polling the analysts for their pick before pulling out an A&M hat.

Johnson, a 6-foot-0, 180 lb. wideout, is considered the 34th best recruit in the nation, and the fifth best overall recruit in the state of Texas. His addition to the Aggies comes on the heels of Missouri City, Texas, wideout Bralon Addison committing to Oregon over A&M, his longtime first choice.

Bralon Addison Commits To Oregon Over Texas A&M

Bralon Addison, the No. 18 rated wide receiver recruit in the nation according to Rivals, has committed to Oregon on National Signing Day 2012. Addison, who played for Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas, chose Oregon over Texas A&M, considered the favorite for Addison, as well as Oklahoma State, where he'd been previously committed.

Addison admitted that the firing of former A&M head coach Mike Sherman reopened his recruitment. He spoke about his decision to the Houston Chronicle:

"It’s definitely a burden off my shoulder," said Addison, who led Hightower to the Class 5A Division I championship game. "I know in the back of my mind I made some people unhappy and some people happy, but you can’t live life like that. When you get an opportunity to help yourself succeed, you have to pick what’s best for you.

"I fell in love with that place when I went up there, as far as academically and athletically."

Addison, a 5-foot-10, 182 lb. wide receiver, is the 13th rated overall recruit in the state of Texas and the 112th overall recruit in the nation according to Rivals.

2012 Texas A&M Football Recruiting: Edward Pope Switches Commitment From TCU To Aggies

It appears that the Texas A&M Aggies have added another recruit to their 2012 class. Beergut from I am the 12th Man relays the information that Carthage, TX ATH Edward Pope (6'3, 170, 4.48) switched his commitment from the TCU Horned Frogs to A&M.

Pope is a consensus Four-Star recruit and holds the 17th-highest ranking for athletes in the 2012 Rivals rankings, trailing Zac Brooks of Jonesboro, AR and Daje Johnson of Pflugerville, TX. He is set to join an Aggies squad that can benefit from his versatility. Pope has the ability to play both wide receiver and defensive end and he projects well at either position. His speed and physicality are well-suited to both positions and tag him as a great get for the Aggies.

2012 Texas A&M Recruiting: Aggies Class Ranks Among SEC's Elite

Despite coming off an incredibly disappointing 7-6 season that led to the firing of head coach Mike Sherman, new Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has been able to hold together, for the most part, Sherman's highly-touted 2012 recruiting class.

The class, which is currently rated No. 9 in the country by Rivals, can match up with anyone in the SEC, as the Aggies have the third-highest rated recruiting class in their new conference, behind only Alabama and Florida.

Texas A&M has a verbal commitment from one five-star recruit, RB Trey Williams of Dekaney, TX, as well as seven four-stars and 13 three-stars.

Of their 21 commitments so far, 17 are from Texas, highlighting one of the big advantages the Aggies will have going forward in the SEC, as none of their conference competitors have nearly the familiarity level and exposure in the giant Texas recruiting hotbed than A&M, the second largest public university in the state with a devoted fan base spread far and wide throughout.

The Aggies inability to win consistently in the Big 12 is one of the main reasons why their move to the SEC, widely considered to be the best conference is college football, has been met with widespread derision.

However, as an interesting SI.com article delves into, conference realignment hasn't had a dramatic effect on the recruiting classes of any of the Southern schools -- Texas A&M, Missouri, TCU and West Virginia -- currently involved in this latest game of musical chairs.

The Aggies were never able to win the Big 12, and defeat the first and second rated recruiting classes from the state of Texas, which annually go to Texas and Oklahoma. Now the question becomes whether the third best group of Texas high school recruits can win the SEC.
