Johnny Manziel: Texas A&M QB considered a Heisman darkhorse

Ronald Martinez

Quarterback Johnny Manziel has worked himself into the Heisman discussion after a stellar start to the season.

The No. 18 Texas A&M Aggies will host the No. 6 LSU Tigers on Saturday in a game that may contain a Heisman hopeful in Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Texas A&M is off to a 5-1 start with their only loss coming against No. 2 Florida on Sept. 8. Manziel has completed 67.4 percent of his passes while throwing 14 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He has helped the Aggies average 47.0 points a game, which ranks fifth in the country.

Aggies Head Coach Kevin Sumlin spoke to Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle about the hype surrounding his quarterback:

"It’s just something you let play out," Sumlin said of how he handles any Heisman hype surrounding his latest candidate. "It’s been my experience those things take care of themselves. And you guys (reporters) are the ones who get all of that done.

According to Zwerneman, Texas A&M hasn't had a Heisman contender this late in the season since Bucky Richardson in 1991. The Aggies only Heisman winner is running back John David Crow, who won the trophy in 1957.

Manziel will have a chance to further prove himself starting this week against sixth ranked LSU and then in conseuctive weeks versus No. 12 Mississippi State and No. 1 Alabama.
