Watch Texas A&M Athletic Director Bill Byrne's Press Conference Live

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne is expected to officially announce his retirement Tuesday afternoon at a 12:30 p.m. CT press conference. You can watch the event live through A&M's official web site here. The link does require registration, but it's free.

Byrne's contract was initially scheduled to expire in May of 2013, one item that's bound to be discussed with the media this afternoon. Byrne was instrumental in guiding the Aggies to the Southeastern Conference, where they'll begin play this fall (they officially join on July 1).

Since his hiring in 2002, Texas A&M student athletics won won 17 national championships and 46 Big 12 championships. However, the major criticism of Byrne's time in College Station was an inconsistent football program that failed to achieve the success of previous decades.

There's also the issue of what A&M lost in moving to the SEC, including their all-sports rivalry with the University of Texas, which looks to be on hold for an unknown amount of time, as well as the dissolution of series against other in-state schools (Texas Tech, Baylor).
