Texas A&M Athletic Director Bill Byrne Retires: Details Of Transition Process

On Tuesday, Texas A&M Aggies athletic director Bill Byrne officially announced his retirement at a press conference at Kyle Field. John Thornton, a former Aggies basketball player and coach who had been acting as associate AD, was named as the interim athletic director.

Brent Zwerneman of the San Antonio Express-News and the Houston Chronicle was on hand at the press conference and gathered up some tidbits of information surrounding the move.

The remainder of Byrne's contract will be bought out by the school. Byrne was reportedly very professional when saying goodbye to the front office and challenged the staff to continue to build champions at A&M. From Tuesday through aug. 31 of this year, Byrne will act as "special advisor A&M president."

The athletic director search committee will be headed up by regent Jim Wilson and Jason Cook, who is the A&M VP for marketing and communications.
