Uh-Oh, Area Volleyball Teams Are Almost In Playoffs?

How quickly the fall season flies by...tonight is the final district game for many of the local volleyball teams and the final regular season game for just as many as they prepare for the playoffs. Which teams should you be paying attention to in the next couple of weeks?

Class 5A

Cy-Woods has rolled off a 39-1 record this season. Led by senior outside hitter Daniela Arena, the Wildcats are perfect in District 17-5A and at home this season. They'll net a district title and a No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs. It's worth noting that Cypress schools have won three of the last four state volleyball titles out of the Houston area. Of course, that stretches back to 1993 and includes Cy-Falls and Cy-Creek, but still it's impressive. No. 14 Cy-Fair will also get a chance at 5A glory after posting a 29-8 record and taking the second spot in 17-5A. Klein Oak, Katy Taylor, The Woodlands, Clear Lake and College Park are all in the Top 25 in 5A and are headed to the playoffs.

Class 4A

Lots of big names here. No. 4 Magnolia has the highest ranking, according to the Texas Girls Coaching Association and made the state finals back in 2008. Friendswood, the last non-Cypress team to win a state title, is at No. 6 while Dawson, Montgomery and Port Neches-Groves round out the top 10.

Funny story about PN-G. It last won the title back in 1981 and 1979 and was the runner-up in 1980. What's so special about those teams? My mom played on all three. PN-G is one of four area team to win multiple state titles in the past 30 years, including Clear Lake, Cy-Creek and East Bernard.

Best of The Rest

No. 20 Cleveland Tarkington just wrapped up a district title on Monday while No. 22 Huffman is also in line to make some noise in the playoffs. Rice Consolidated and Wallis Brazos should also make some noise in Class 2A. Clements just won its first district title in school history and Kingwood put itself in position for a share of the District 14-5A title with a victory over The Woodlands last week.
