Pearland Softball Ranked Nationally

The Pearland girls softball team was ranked No. 4 recently by the USA Today/National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Poll. You may remember Pearland won the state championship a few weeks ago with a pair of shutouts.

From the Pearland Journal:

The USA Today/NFCA is regarded as a much more accurate poll than the ESPN poll because it factors strength of schedule, quality of players, and quality of competition within the state in its rankings.

Pearland’s position is likely not to change in either of the final polls to be released later this week.

Well....kinda. I mean, the USA Today polls are probably more accurate than if I wanted to put one together. Or if you decided to rank all the teams in the nation. But, these things are less accurate than NCAA coach's polls. At least those coaches may play each other or at least see other teams on film. What are the chances these high school coaches scout anyone other than teams in their own classification in their own state?

Which is why these high school polls are so silly. Not to take anything away from the Lady Oilers. Their accomplishments this season deserve to be lauded. It's just that coming up with a "national ranking" seems entirely too arbitrary to give it more than a passing though. Which you just did, so we can now move on.
