Woke up this morning with "Welcome to the Jungle" on my mind. Could it be my brain's way of telling me Jim Rome's incredibly tired, played out radio show will devote no less than a hour tomorrow to myopically downplaying the U.S.'s inspired Round of 16 run's end as a referendum on the entire sport of soccer as a whole? Very possibly.

A not so brief aside: this sort of idiocy is bound to happen. There will undoubtedly be a number of columns/blog posts going live around the country today attempting to justify those respective writers' intellectual laziness and/or metathesiophobia (the fear of change) with respect to soccer by declaring something hilariously broad and overarching like "soccer's grand experiment goes awry again" or "the 'here comes soccer now (for real this time)' crowd is embarrassed yet again". Sadly these people actually exist and even more depressing, may actually believe what they write. It's one thing to have differing tastes; liking or not liking soccer is not a crime in and of itself, but to rain all over the parade of which ever side you happen to not fall into at the most inopportune/emotionally sensitive time? Apropos of nothing (if not outright exploitive), but I digress.

Another theory is that I'm all kinds of hyped up for Texas native Robert Rodriguez' campy looking take on the Predator series, "PREDATORS". Nothing does it for me like B-(and sometimes C, D, etc.)grade sci-fi pulp. The original took place in a jungle, and hey, who knows? Axl Rose probably saw it, possibly dug it.

I'd be remiss, however, if I didn't concede the real reason is probably that even after all these years (the track was originally recorded and released in 1987(!)), "Welcome to the Jungle" still hits as hard as ever. Non-sensical lyrics about the "jungle" of big city life coupled with killer break beats and the same old GNR shred-tastic guitar work? Please, and thank you.
