According to Jayson Stark, the Phillies are working on a “major deal” for a starting pitcher.
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has also talked to the A’s and Diamondbacks regarding Ben Sheets and Dan Haren, but many believe Roy Oswalt may make the most sense.
Buster Olney reported, along with the news that the Phillies are looking at a front-line pitcher:
Oswalt fits in a lot of ways. They could make the dollars work by moving Jayson Werth’s contract — and they’d have Oswalt for 2011.
Tim Kurkjian also chimed in with news, saying sources close to Oswalt say he feels as good as he did in 2005, and that a move to Philadelphia would “revitalize” him.
The Phillies may not have the prospects to make this deal work, so a three-way trade involving Jayson Werth seems likely.
