New High Schools Popping Up All Over Houston

It's been a while since I lived in the Houston area full-time. My parents are still there, so I've visited quite a bit over the past 10 years since I moved away. I'm struck, though, with how many new high schools seem to pop up overnight around town.

The first one I can remember was Klein Collins. But, shortly after that school opened, the Cypress schools went crazy and opened like 15 more (number may be an exaggeration). Katy has a similarly huge number of schools and the population to support even more. Did you realize that they have enough students for every school in that area to stay in the biggest UIL classification if 6A is added? That's nuts.

Well, it seems a new school has cropped up this season, as Humble Summer Creek has started playing volleyball games and is practicing for the football season. Summer Creek? Really? I guess there must be a subdivision named Summer Creek out there. If not, it's not a very good name.

Of course, they couldn't be bothered to come up with a cool new mascot name, so they're just the Bulldogs. Honestly, 90 percent of the schools in Texas are either Eagles, Bulldogs, Tigers, Panthers, Wildcats or Warriors. Can't we branch out?

I guess this is just another sign I'm getting old...I start complaining about all these young whippersnappers and their fancy new schools...
