Rice's Solomon Injured, Might Redshirt

The Rice Owl football program suffered a big setback on Thursday, as Scott Solomon, one of the top defensive linemen in Conference USA, broke his foot. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Solomon would be a senior in 2010, but could still utilize a redshirt season.

Solomon, who registered 63 tackles and 6.5 sacks a year ago, is the second key loss to the defensive line this off-season for the Owls. Alex Lowry, who started nine games as a freshman in '09, left the team this summer. The Owls do return a pair of players who saw time on the line last year in Cheta Ozougwu and Michael Smith.

Rice is coming of a 2-10 campaign, but has its sights set on a bowl game in 2010, with lots of returning talent, and Michigan transfer Sam McGuffie ready to contribute at running back.
