Astros, Wade Get Another Reliever

I'll say this for Ed Wade, he sure is determined. The easiest part of a team to fix is the bullpen and Wade is no stranger to collecting bullpen arms.

Why, just today, he traded cash considerations to the Reds for 24-year old Enerio Del Rosario. Could this be a reaction to Brandon Lyon and Matt Lindstrom both going into a funk at the same time? Maybe, but I think this is about a bigger issue.

The Astros had four top relief prospects entering the 2010 season. Danny Meszaros reached Triple-A, but was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance in a tainted supplement. Chia-jen Lo, a young fireballer from Taiwan, pitched in just seven games and 15 innings this season before requiring elbow surgery. Alberto Arias and Sammy Gervacio both suffered similar injury-plagued fates, as did Chris Sampson and Jeff Fulchino from the major league roster.

The thing is, all pitchers will get hurt eventually. Depth is important because of that fact. If it only cost money, and no one lost a roster spot (well, Ozzie Navarro did, but he wasn't playing much anyway), this is a good move. If nothing else, it gives Brad Mills a fresh arm to throw out there on Friday.
