Luhnow Brings The Geek To Houston's Front Office

I couldn't be happier as the details roll in about the Astros new GM, Jeffrey Luhnow. The 25-page report. The PowerPoint presentation. Everything about it was just awesome.

And it all goes into the reasons why I was so excited about his hire. He brings a philosophy to this team that I've been advocating for the past eight or nine years without the team seemingly caring about how to evaluate players.

Look, I'm not a complete Moneyball defender. I understand scouting is an integral role in developing minor leaguers and to pad out the human element of things. But, there are new ways to understand the game other than the way people looked at it 50 years ago.

I also know just focusing on stats/OBP/etc. is going to be the fix. No, the thing that Houston will need is exactly this. They need to find their own edge and keep it secret. I'm just excited they're making that progress.
