The Houston Texans have clinched the AFC South and now they are battling for a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs between New England, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. The Texans will be without defensive coordinator Wade Phillips who had surgery on his kidney and gallbladder and will be out for Sunday's game against Carolina and is looking to be back Jan. 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Filling in for Phillips will be linebackers coach Reggie Herring.
The Carolina Panthers have lost four of their last six games and have been out of playoff contention for the past few weeks, and rookie of the year candidate Cam Newton has cooled of over the past few weeks and has thrown six interceptions in his last four games with four touchdowns.
