Region III of the Class 5A girls playoff bracket consists entirely of Houston area teams. Now that we're at the regional semifinals, it's all but guaranteed that a Houston area team is going to state. Who are the contenders?
↵District 18-5A champion Elsik will take on 24-5A champ Clear Springs on Friday while 17-5A champ Cy Falls will face 21-5A champ North Shore at the Aldine ISD Campbell Center. The regional finals will be played the next day, deciding which of those lucky schools is going to Austin.
↵Last season, both Hightower and Cy-Fair made it to the state tournament. Hightower was knocked out of the playoffs by Clear Springs Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals while Cy-Fair lost to Katy Taylor in the area round, guaranteeing a new team will be heading to state.
↵Unfortunately, one of the four aforementioned will be the only Houston-area 5A team at state. Atascocita and The Woodlands both made it to the regional quarterfinals, but fell Wednesday to Georgetown and Pflugerville, respectively.
↵Elsik is no stranger to the state tournament, making three straight state title appearances from '96-'98 and winning the Class 5A title in '98. None of the other three have made it to state before.
