Just Who Are The Houston Rockets?

With the recent firing of Rick Adelman, the Rockets affirmed their plunge into the mediocre abyss that makes up the majority of the NBA.

↵

The Rockets were once a defensive juggernaut, led by JVG and the league's best center and best scorer. But those days are over. Les Alexander then transformed the team into a high-octane offensive machine led by Adelman, but that chapter has since ended.

↵

So who are today's Houston Rockets?

↵

Let's take a look at the glass that's half full. The Rockets went 43-39 with no one really that good. Sure, our efficiency ratings are great, but we don't have a Derrick Rose. Heck, we don't have a Lamarcus Aldridge. This team doesn't even have a borderline all-star.

↵

Despite the lack of "star power", the Rockets still managed to play with best of 'em. And without their horrendous start to the season, the Rockets could very well be surprising the Spurs or another team in this year's playoffs. The Rockets are a team full of over-achievers and gritty hustlers. This mentality is seen in their style of play. They are a good team, and they have a good GM and a great owner.

↵

But what about the glass that's half empty?

↵

Will the style of basketball change under the new head coach? No one knows how Lowry, Martin and co. will respond to the new coach. Will they bring the same hustle every night? Will their play be defined by their mentality, as it was under Adelman?

↵

The 2011-12 season, if there is one, will surely show how special Adelman was for this team. You can hear it from the players and see it in their game. But bygones are bygones, and the Rockets must move forward.

↵

Let us not forget that the Rockets finished in last place last year. True, that's what happens when you play in the best division in basketball, but results are results and Houston Rockets fan deserve better.

The Rockets are now a coach-less team with no stars. But, Morey has an abundance of draft picks and chips to deal. So, we will soon find out who the Rockets really are.
