Per the busy Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans have agreed to a three year deal with wide receiver Jacoby Jones. The deal is worth $10.5 million dollars with $3.5 million guaranteed.
I am not as surprised by this deal as both sides professed their desire to stick together, but I am surprised no receiver desperate team (Chicago? Washington? New York?) didn't jump in and offer more. I guess those eyes are focused are bigger name receivers.
As for Jones, he's a significant part of the Texans offense. He's coming off a career-high 51 receptions and 562 yards. After a first half filled with drops, Jones averaged about five catches and 72 yards in the last month of the season. Surprisingly, Jones rated out with the highest catch rate of any Texans receiver, according to Football Outsiders, and is top-15 in the entire league for 2010.
I know some think Houston overpaid, but they didn't. I think the price is pretty fair market value for a receiver that is a 2 to some, a 3 to others, and one-half of the best second receiver to one in particular.
However you view him on the depth chart, the Texans needed the veteran third receiver. David Anderson has not been able to overtake Jones, despite his former stint in Gary Kubiak's doghouse, and Dorin Dickerson played 38 snaps last year while trying to make the transition to receiver. Even if the Texans have shied away from using Jones as the deep-ball threat he is (see: 2009), Jacoby can still provide the team with another weapon if he continues to play as he did during the second half of the season.
