The Sam Houston State Bearkats enter the FCS playoffs having dropped just one game to an FCS opponent all season, the Southland conference champion Central Arkansas Bears. The team they're facing this weekend, the Cal Poly Mustangs, dropped two games this year, but those losses came in arguably the toughest FCS conference in the country, the Big Sky. One of the losses came to the No. 2 overall seed in the playoffs, the Eastern Washington Eagles.
Cal Poly won their regular season finale, 42-34, over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. Sam Houston State used the final week of their season to take on a more formidable opponent, losing to Heisman Trophy front-runner Johnny Manziel's Texas A&M Aggies. The Bearkats haven't scored fewer than 20 points in a single game all season, and their highest point output came against Southeast Louisiana when they dropped 70 points. Cal Poly also put up 70 on an opponent when they roundly beat the Idaho State Bengals.
The winner of this game will face the winner of Montana State-Stony Brook contest in the quarterfinals.
