After taking the first two games of the series, Rice fell to UAB 6-5 on Sunday in 12 innings. The Blazers took a 6-4 lead in the top of the 12th, and Rice could only muster one run in the bottom of the inning as its comeback attempt fell short.
The game wasted strong offensive efforts from several Owls. Shortstop Ford Stainback, left fielder Michael Ratterree, catcher Craig Manuel and third baseman Shane Hoelscher all recorded two hits on Sunday.
Starting pitcher John Simms was effective for Rice. He went 5.2 innings pitched and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks.
The loss breaks a five-game winning streak for the Owls. Rice is now tied with Central Florida atop the Conference-USA standings. A three-game series begins between the two teams on May 17. It is the final series of the regular season for Rice.
