Serena Williams suffered an ignominious defeat in the 2012 French Open when, for the first time in her illustrious career, she was eliminated in the first round of a Grand Slam event. On Tuesday at the 2012 Championships in Wimbledon, she achieved some small bit of redemption on the famous grass courts.
Williams advanced by defeating Barbora Zahlahova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. She will prepare for the second round. She fared better than her sister Venus, who was eliminated in the first day of play on Monday.
Also advancing on Tuesday was men's No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, who bested Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in three sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mardy Fish picked up a win as well, keeping American tennis hopes alive as he dispatched Ruben Ramirez in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.
Still to finish play on Tuesday are Andy Roddick and Andy Murray.
