The first day of the Summer Olympic Games are in the books and there were plenty of medals to be handed out, and the early medal count has China in the lead with six total medals and four of them being gold. Just behind China is Italy and the United States who each have five medals.
The one gold medal for the United States came when Ryan Lochte cruised to victory in the 400m IM. Two of China's four gold medals came in swimming, one in weightlifting and one in shooting, while Italy won a gold medal in fencing and their other came in archery with their last arrow to defeat the United States.
Here is the current top five medal count by country.
