The Rice Owls took the Marshall Thundering Herd to double overtime but ultimately fell short, losing 54-51. Marshall struck first in overtime, with running back Remi Watson scoring on a three-yard touchdown run. The Owls responded with a touchdown of their own by quarterback Driphus Jackson, tying the game at 48 apiece.
In the second overtime, however, Marshall held Rice to a 23-yard field goal by kicker Chris Boswell. Marshall clinched the victory on a 5-yard scoring rush by running back Kevin Grooms.
Box Score Hero: Rice saw an impressive performance from quarterback Taylor McHargue in the losing effort. McHargue completed 21 of 36 passes for 314 yards and 3 touchdowns. McHargue also added 153 rushing yards on 17 carries, including a 43 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Rankings Ramifications: Both teams currently sit outside the Top 25, so this game shouldn't impact the rankings.
But Did They Cover? Marshall failed to cover the spread, being favored by 3.5 entering the game.
