Astros "Passive" In Free Agency?

That's exactly what you want a team who finished dead last in the league to say:they're going to be "passive" players in free agency this winter.

I don't blame them, since everything the Astros have done over the past year has been about saving money. I know people are excited because the Astros are finally rebuilding, but don't forget the sneaky fact that it's only rebuilding because the new ownership group is trying to cut payroll.

Oh, and they're not even spending to fill in the holes that are left. Clint Barmes, even though he'll be relatively cheap to bring back (though on a multi-year deal), is gone without much doubt, so the Astros are going to the waiver wire and minor league free agents to fill his spot.

It's not the first step Astros fans probably want to see Jim Crane make, but it does make sense. If the Astros are going to rebuild with young players, might as well get rid of the overpriced guys to actually open spots for the younger talent.

I don't love the philosophy and it's annoying to think that there's value out on the market that the Astros are overlooking. But, at least the team has a definitive direction they're headed in.
