Okay, so the Astros will not have a new general manager in place when the Winter Meetings kick off in Dallas. They will likely not trade Wandy Rodriguez or make any free agent signings next week, so news will be slow.
↵That doesn't mean Jim Crane and Company cannot make the team better while they are there. There will be so many GM candidates wandering the halls, what better time to make impromptu meetings or trade talks to feel out how a guy thinks on certain topics.
↵It's like a free networking week for an owner looking for a GM. I'm sure it's not kosher to be shopping around for other team's executives while they are trying to improve in the most important set of meetings during the winter. But, small conversations can turn into jobs down the road.
↵If anything, the most important networking that Crane and Postolos may be able to do is filling in the rest of the team. They don't just need a GM, they need a lot of other guys in that front office, too. So, Sunday and Monday will kick start those conversations. Let's hope the Astros new ownership group is taking notes.
