Astros Spring Training: Astros Make First Cuts, Send Down Prospects

The first cuts of the spring training season came for the Astros after they went through a brutal stretch of five games in three days. Most of these players were prospects or players without much of a real chance of sticking. Zachary Levine provides the full list for us:

Those cut, with players on the 40-man roster officially being “optioned” and those not on the 40-man roster being “reassigned”:

LHP Douglas Arguello
RHP David Carpenter
RHP Cesar Carrillo
1B Koby Clemens
RHP Jorge De Leon
1B Brian Dopirak
C Rene Garcia
OF Jon Gaston
RHP Arcenio Leon
OF J.D. Martinez
SS Jiovanni Mier
2B Jimmy Paredes
INF Jose Carlos Thompson

With this group exiled, the Astros currently have 48 players in camp. 49 if you count Jason Castro, as the roster does. They will play the Phillies today in the Grapefruit League, and we’ll see if Ed Wade is able to deal anyone to them by the end of the game.
