Can Houston Dump Brett Myers And Wandy Rodriguez?

While Wandy Rodriguez has been one of the better starters in the National League this year, being sent to the disabled list will do little for his trade value. Brett Myers has single-handedly been ruining his trade value since the second start of the season; despite a strong outing against the Cubs on Wednesday, he sits at 2-4 with a 4.82 ERA, and leads the NL in homers allowed with 15. MLB Trade Rumors took a look at starters who could be available come July, and both Myers and Rodriguez made the list:

Brett Myers, Astros: Myers earns $7MM this year, $11MM in '12, and has a $10MM club option with a $3MM buyout for '13. Groundballs are down and home runs are up, and Myers is looking like a well-paid innings guy.
Wandy Rodriguez, Astros: Wandy would be one of the more appealing pitchers on this list, but he's on the DL for elbow soreness. He's well-compensated and can be controlled through 2014. If he comes back strong the Astros might be well-served to escape his contract if possible.

Rodiguez should be able to bring in a real return. Myers...well, maybe not. Just goes to show you that negotiating an extension following a career year is never the smartest strategy. The Astros may be better off just dumping him for whatever they can get to avoid the future salary pain.
