Astros decline 2013 option on catcher Chris Snyder

The Astros decide to not pick up Chris Snyder's $4 million option.

Chris Humphreys-US PRESSWIRE

The Houston Astros made some roster moves on Thursday, and one of those was not picking up the $4 million option on catcher Chris Snyder. Snyder does not go home empty handed as he gets bought out for $500,000, and he now automatically becomes a free agent.

Snyder, who is 31-years-old, played in 76 games for the Astros this past season season, and started 67 of them behind the plate. Hitting was an issue for Snyder as he only hit .176, had seven home runs and just 24 RBI.

Prior to playing in Houston, Snyder was with the Pittsburgh Pirates where he hit .271 with three homers and 17 RBI in just 34 games before he was sidelined for the year with back surgery.

Prior to that, Snyder played for Arizona Diamondbacks from 2004 before heading to the Pirates in 2010. For his career, Snyder has 77 home runs and is hitting .225.
