The Houston Astros added another piece to their bullpen on Friday by signing Jose Veras to a one-year contract. The team now has to make room for Veras on the 40-man roster, which they have not done yet.
The 32-year-old Veras spent last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he appeared in 72 games and had a 3.62 ERA. As has been the case throughout his career, Veras showed fantastic stuff in Milwaukee, but sometimes struggled to locate it. The right-hander struck out 79 and walked 40 in 67 innings, which is consistent with his career 9.4 strikeouts and 4.9 walks per nine innings.
Houston's roster could still use a lot of work, but it probably won't get much else this winter. Some more pieces could be added, but the Astros are going to head into 2013 with a small payroll and not much hope. At least their new uniforms are cool!
