Astros Cut Nine Players, Send To Minor League Camp

So far, Houston has sent 15 players to the minor leagues, but haven't really resolved any of their future roster problems. Thursday morning, Houston announced that the following players were heading to the backfields, courtesy of Steve Campbell.

Paul Clemens, RHP; Jonathan Singleton, 1B/OF; Rene Garcia, C; Lance Pendleton, RHP; Juan Abreu, RHP; Jake Goebbert, OF; Brandon Barnes, OF; Diory Hernandez, INF: Chris Wallace

Those are some big hits to the bullpen here, as Juan Abreu really a surprising cut. Maybe it's just surprising to me, since I had been pushing him as a sleeper candidate to break out this season. Oh, well.

It's also a quick turnaround for Paul Clemens, who dazzled in four shutout innings on Wednesday and then found himself in the minors. As I said this morning over at TCB, it appears Clemens could be the guy who helps Houston first out of the minors, as his strikeout rate and poise make him the sleeper best player out of the Michael Bourn trade.

In other news, I like the term "sleeper."
