MLB Draft 2012: Luhnow, Houston Astros Preparing For Top Pick

Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle has a good story about how the Houston Astros are preparing for the No. 1 overall pick in this June's draft.

Based on the experiences of the last two scouting directors to have No. 1 picks, the Astros will know every flaw of the player they select — whether it be Stanford righthander Mark Appel, five-tool Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton, up-and-coming University of San Francisco hurler Kyle Zimmer or any of the others at the top of a draft with no clear runaway favorite.

Zimmer is the new kid on the block for the "1-1" pick, as he's had a huge spring with his strikeout potential. Appel was the favorite coming in to this season but has fallen off a bit early before rebounding with a big start against Rice. Buxton is probably the top high school player in the country.

What we do know is the Astros will be ridiculously prepared. Add in Sig Mejdal's statistical projection finds and the Astros could be in for a very interesting draft. I can't wait.

For what it's worth, my money is still on LSU's Kevin Gausman over Appel, who reminds me a little too much of Mark Prior.
