The Houston Cougars lead the UAB Blazers, 16-10 at halftime in Houston, Tex.
Quarterback David Piland has led the high-paced Houston offense, completing 17-of-24 passes for 233 yards. The sophomore threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Shane Ros to start the scoring in the first quarter.
UAB closed the gap in the final minute before halftime with a 27-yard field goal by Ty Long. The Blazers had first-and-goal at the Houston 5-yard line, but a penalty and a sack forced them to settle for a field goal to cut the lead to 16-10.
Matt Hogan hit three field goals of 23, 27 and 23 yards for Houston. Hogan missed a 48-yarder as time expired in the half.
UAB's only touchdown came on a 16-yard pass from Austin Brown to Jay Davis in the first quarter. Davis has three catches for 84 yards. Brown is 10-of-19 passing for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Houston is 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Conference USA, making them second in the C-USA West Division. UAB comes into the contest 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference. The Blazers picked up their first win of the season last week with a 52-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
Houston will receive the ball to start the second half.
