Deontay Greenberry, the No. 7 rated wide receiver recruit in the nation according to Rivals, has committed to the Houston Cougars on National Signing Day 2012. Greenberry, who played for Washington Union High School in Fresno, California chose the Cougars in a shocker over Notre Dame, the team he was a long-time verbal commit to.
Greenberry was considered a lock for the Irish for most of the recruiting season, until he took a surprise visit to Houston in January. He explained to the Fresno Bee that a family relationship is what drove to the Irish initially, but not ultimately:
"But I was going there for all the wrong reasons," he said.
The main reason, actually: His cousin, Tee Shepard, a defensive back who graduated from Washington at the semester and is at South Bend now.
"I was following him," Greenberry said, "but that wasn't best for me."
Greenberry, a 6-foot-3, 180 lb. wide receiver, is rated by Rivals as the 49th best player in the nation and the ninth best recruit in the state of California. In Greenberry, new Houston head coach Tony Levine has a huge recruiting coup.
